Christmas Memories
Karen Hall • December 11, 2015
At this time of year many of us become nostalgic, remembering special Christmas memories, traditions or simply “the good old days.” For others this time of year is not quite so bright, perhaps due to the death of a loved one around the holidays, being alone (or just feeling alone), having to navigate tricky family relationships or a host of other reasons.
The one thing I remember most about Christmas as a child was the inability to sleep on Christmas Eve – I was always so excited. Even as a grown up (in terms of age anyway), I find it difficult to sleep soundly on the night before Christmas. It is a welcome bit of annual insomnia, reminding me of a happy childhood filled with joyful Christmas celebrations.
My favorite current Christmas tradition is a two-day affair. On Christmas Eve, everyone in my immediate family goes to my sister’s house for a non-traditional meal (think spaghetti) and then to a candlelight service. The next morning we all meet at my mom and dad’s house for a full day of eating (my favorite is the smoked turkey salad), opening presents, and visiting with each other and additional family members who occasionally drop in.
What are your Christmas memories and favorite traditions? We’d love to hear them. And if your memories are not of the “wonderful” variety we hope that by writing them here you may in some way leave them behind.
Merry Christmas and peace to all.
Every January we like to gather as a croux and plan for the year ahead. It serves as a holiday celebration and a strategy session. We look forward to it every year. Over the last few years, we’ve also begun incorporating a “word of the year” practice, where we each choose a word that we will focus on throughout the year.
