Reflections (and book recommendations) from Global Leadership Summit 2022

A couple weeks ago, our croux had the opportunity to (virtually) attend one of our favorite annual events, Global Leadership Summit (GLS).
GLS is an inspiring leadership event that brings together some of the world’s sharpest speakers and thinkers. This was our team’s 10th time attending, and we look forward to it every year.
We always like to share a few takeaways from the summit, and this year we decided to compile the book recommendations we made note of as well. We hope you find these tidbits valuable, and perhaps you’ll be inspired to attend GLS in 2023. We’d love to see you there!

My biggest takeaway was from the talk by Vanessa Van Edwards. I always enjoy talks that include practical advice or actions you can put into practice immediately. Vanessa opened our minds up to how something as simple as a question can impact the connections in your life. She challenged us to ask questions beyond just “How are you?” because we all tend to answer the same way: “Good. Busy, but good.”
In order to build more meaningful connections with our co-workers, friends and family, she suggested alternative questions such as, "What's the highlight of your day?", "Have anything exciting coming up?" or "What's your personal passion project?"
These are simple questions, but they make such a big difference. Research even shows that answering these types of questions releases dopamine because it prompts you to remember something happy.
She went on to tell us that effective leaders use emotion to connect instead of logistics or metrics. As the world becomes busier and more hectic, I think her challenge is something we could all use to encourage one another and grow together.

I also really enjoyed Vanessa Van Edwards’ talk. She discussed how easily we get in the routine of asking people questions that don’t really build connections. I appreciated how she offered up examples of specific questions we could ask that could take all of the relationships in our lives to the next level.

My standout was Craig Groeschel and the way he frames "it," and challenges us to get better for ourselves and the people around us, both personally and professionally.

I went into GLS looking forward to several of the presentations and speakers, but especially Ron Howard. I recently read his book, The Boys, which chronicles his life, family and career. One of the things he said that stuck with me was that he loves collaboration.
In his example, he was talking about a movie scene and how collaboration helped it become something better than he could have imagined. I also get excited when I experience good collaboration because it isn’t always easy.
A few quotes from Howard that stuck with me were:
- “Have the confidence to be open to collaboration.”
- “Don’t be a control freak.”
- “Be a worthy collaborator.”
All of these spoke to me, and I am working to be better at collaboration for my family, croux and clients.
